It’s pretty even and seems fair(ish), but the total amount of work that needs to be done between 2 full-time jobs, managing our lives and the lives of 2 kids, and keeping a decent-sized house is significantly greater than 2 people have time and energy for.

While the inside chores may not be divided fairly, my husband has a lot more chores in the way of machine maintenance and repairs. The important thing is that we stay flexible and help each other when one person feels overwhelmed. I think our system is efficient too. My son and his girlfriend do house cleaning and cooking as a team. That sounds nice but then when he has to work on their large home construction projects he’s pretty much doing it himself. It’s hard to be even Steven…so you just have to keep busy and maybe renegotiate as time goes on. I remember when my father retired and my mother said to him….we’ll I’m retired too. Since you can mop the floors more easily that will be your job. My father was a good guy…he did them gladly for her. And my mother…she was a smart cookie. But fair!
